Connecting water markets for a Swimmable Birrarung

Water Markets for Thriving Ecosystems

How do we establish new financial markets that centre regeneration and net gain for the Birrarung?

Water Markets for Thriving Ecosystems
Project overview

Developing new markets

This project is one component of coordinating new streams of capital for the long-term regeneration and health of the Birrarung. In partnership with Eco Detection and Environmental Markets Australia, we are designing and launching a prototype "nutrient credit market," allowing public and private organisations to purchase credits that fund verified projects reducing pollution and improving ecological health. The prototype will establish baseline data, implement monitoring technology, explore governance and market design, and direct initial funding to on-ground projects. Central to this work is deep engagement with river stakeholders to ensure alignment with current financial levers, infrastructure and its role in supporting a holistic approach to a Swimmable Birrarung.

Our role

Aligning to swimmability

Eco Detection is the Project Owner and Technology Lead, implementing advanced water monitoring devices and data systems providing the evidence base for credit creation. Our role is as convenor and infrastructure interconnector, aligning vision across partners, coordinating stakeholders, and supporting the interconnectedness to current financial infrastructure around the Birrarung.
