Local street activation with schools and their communities at the centre

School Streets

How can we ensure radically inclusive futures where all communities shape and benefit from street transformation?

School Streets
Project overview

Schools as street activation hubs

School Streets is an opportunity to reimagine the 1,500+ school precincts across Greater Melbourne as catalysts for climate action, child health, and neighborhood transformation. By scaling proven approaches like Merri-bek's Ride & Stride program through the 300,000 Streets Earthshot, we can create a metropolitan network of safe, low-carbon school communities that demonstrate the co-benefits of street transformation while building grassroots momentum and political support for broader systemic change. This project is in exploration model. Recognising there is already a lot of existing community activity, we're asking whether there are new and collective angles for this existing work to affect more systemic change?

Our role

Activating new angles

As well as being part of the established group, we are exploring the current state with diverse stakeholders across the city and looking to global success stories such as Paris schools streets for inspiration and guidance. As this project progresses we will support the community activation of school streets across our city.
